This is a terrible article. I've had to do some research on this for my biogeochemistry class--here's the run down:Before the 1970s millions of Bangladeshis died because of diseases related to unclean water. This was because they drank surface water contaminated with sewage and other bacteria. International aid agencies came in and helped them dig millions of shallow wells between 10 and 50 meters deep to access bacteria-free groundwater. The mortality rate in Bangladesh dropped significantly as millions of lives were saved. In the early 1990s, people started showing symptoms of arsenicosis--chronic arsenic poisoning. Oddly enough, the arsenic in question is not anthropogenic (human-caused). Natural arsenic is pretty well dispersed throughout the earth's crust. However, it's usually not a problem for drinking water because it adsorbes (chemically sticks) to certain iron compounds (iron oxyhydroxides) meaning it can't be transported to the surface with groundwater. The difference is that Bangladesh rests on a lot of deposited organic material, like dead grasses and algae and other stuff. As this stuff decays, it consumes oxygen through respiration. This turns the underground environment from an oxidizing zone (like the surface of the earth) into a reducing zone. This decreases the degree to which arsenic sticks to oxyhydroxides, causing some to leech out into groundwater. Ironically, the Bangladeshi government blamed the aid agenices for the contamination, even though they claim they didn't know about the arsenic problem. Regardless, millions of Bangladeshis (who might have been killed by waterborne disease twenty years earlier) now suffer slowly from arsenic poisoning. There are ways to filter and/or treat water for arsenic, but none of them are cost-effective in a country with a GDP of around $1500 per capita. The best solution is to avoid drinking from contaminated wells (it's okay to bathe and wash clothes in it) or dig wells that are at least ~100m deep. All in all, it's a tragic situation for a country desparately trying to lift itself out of poverty.

Why does everybody bash Nokia? They are only the most successful mobile phone company on the planet..
If the Bush Presidency taught us anything, it's that if you repeat lies long enough and loud enough, you can get about half the country to believe you. I don't know how or why this is possible, but we all saw it happen. I suppose that some people want these things to be true, so they believe without regard to the actual facts. About all we can do is to continue repeating the truth as loudly as we can - with the ballot box being the biggest amplifier.!

You got us, the Onion is part of the "vast left-wing conspiracy"?
Matter of opinion, I guess. Origin of Species was his masterpiece, in mine. |

lol what Hollywood said. The article wasn't "golf balls magically materialize in their owners lap in 1000 years."Also, would golf balls in water erode not decompose? and wouldn't the rate at which they do so be different?EDIT: also, there are companies that go fishing for golf balls in water at golf courses, clean the balls, repackage them, and sell them. So I give it a few months tops before that sucker's gone.

Open Office IS available for distribution on bittorrent. What difference does that make to you?The bittorrent protocol is used all the time to officially distribute software, as it removes all the bandwidth costs associated with distribution from a central server, making the cost of distribution essentialy zero.http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/

The difference is China actually has a real economy, making things the rest of the world wants while everyone else plays fantasy numbers games. Every supermarket the world over will keep sending your money to China long after the rest of the world has turned into a ghetto. |
